ROBERT’S RULES FOR TINY GROUPS (The “We’re Only 4–5 People, Let’s Not Fight” Edition)

Why we use this stuff: So meetings don’t turn into a chaotic group chat. Think of it as traffic lights for talking — keeps everything fair and moving.

1. How to Start Something (The Motion)

• Raise your hand or say: “I make a motion to…”

• Example: “I make a motion to have pizza parties every Friday!”

Pro Tip: Keep it short. No one wants a novel.

2. The “Second” (You Need Backup)

• Someone else must say: “I second that!”

• No second = idea dies immediately (sorry, pizza guy).

Think of it as: “I also think that’s not completely crazy.”

3. Discussion Time (The Fun Part)

• Chair says: “Is there any discussion?”

• Take turns. Be respectful. No interrupting.

• Funny but true rule: You can only talk after you’re recognized by the Chair.

Joke Rule: If you start rambling, the Chair can yell “Point of Order!” (which is fancy for “Dude, wrap it up.”)

4. Time to Vote!

• Chair asks: “All in favor say ‘Aye’… All opposed say ‘Nay’.”

• Most common: Majority wins (3 out of 5 beats 2).

• You can also do a quick hand vote if it’s close.

Pro Move: If it’s obvious everyone agrees, just say “Without objection, we’ll do it.” Saves time!

5. Quick Survival Phrases

Golden Rules for Our Small Group

• Only one person talks at a time.

• Everyone gets a chance to speak.

• The Chair is the referee (not the boss).

• Keep it kind — we’re all on the same team.

• If it’s tiny and obvious, you can relax the rules a bit.
